Dodgers place Manny Ramirez on waivers

Should a team claim Ramirez, the Dodgers can arrange a trade or let the claiming team assume Ramirez's contract. Ramirez is in the final season of a two-year contract, with a salary of $20 million this season. The Dodgers could also pull Ramirez off waivers.

Waiver claims are awarded based on standings, with the team with the lowest record getting preference. Because Ramirez plays for the Dodgers, all National League teams have the chance to claim him before American League clubs. That is an important factor, considering the Chicago Sun-Times has reported the White Sox would be interested in the slugger.

Ramirez just came off the disabled list on Saturday, and is hitless in seven at-bats since then. He had been on the DL with a right calf strain, and is hitting .306 with a .396 on-base percentage, eight home runs and 39 RBI in 63 games this season.
