Braves' Infante earns NL weekly honors

08/23/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Atlanta Braves infielder Omar Infante was named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending August 22.

Over seven games during the week, the 28-year-old batted .433, which was good for third-highest in the NL, and led MLB with nine runs scored. The 2010 All- Star also tied for the league lead with three homers, and his .900 slugging percentage was best among all NL hitters.

Infante, who had hits in every game played during the week and totaled four multi-hit contests, extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games.

His standout performance came in Sunday's 16-5 demolishing of the Chicago Cubs, registering his first-ever two home run game and tying a career-high with four runs batted in.

It was Infante's first career weekly honor, helping the Braves stay 2 1/2 games ahead of Philadelphia in the NL East.

Other nominees for the weekly award included rookie teammates Mike Minor and Jason Heyward, Milwaukee's Ryan Braun and Casey McGehee, Cincinnati's Jay Bruce, Brandon Phillips, and Bronson Arroyo, Washington's Ian Desmond, San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez and Jon Garland, Cubs' Aramis Ramirez, Mets' Jose Reyes and Johan Santana, Philadelphia's Jimmy Rollins and Roy Oswalt, Cardinals' rookie Jaime Garcia and Dodgers' Ted Lilly.
